The history of the world has seen many ages until now. Many of them include the starting of the pre-historic era with the primitive age, followed by the Stone Age, Metal Age, and Wheel Age until the most recent ones namely the Industrial age, the Computer Age and the present “Internet Age”. It is also noteworthy that the world has gradually increased the speed at which it has progressed in each of the successive ages. According to one survey the amount of development which the world used to do in one century previously is now occurring within a span of just 3 years in the present times. And this rate of progress is still increasing and improving continuously. Among all the ages, the most rapid growth until now has by far occurred in the present “Internet Age” mainly in the field of technological development.
The field of technological development comprises of many sub categories like automotive technology, medical technology, electronic technology, bio technology, computer technology, web technology, nuclear technology, space technology etc. Out of them the field of web technology is reaching new horizons with regard to the amount of web development taking place all over the world everyday.
Web development is a broad term for the work involved in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network). This can include web design, web programming, web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration and e-commerce development. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services. There can be hundreds of employees mainly the web developers working in a large organization or a large web development company where as it can range to as small as only a single person or two serving as a web master and/or system technician in a small web enterprise.
Since the mid-1990s, web development has been one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The growth of this industry is being pushed by large businesses wishing to sell products and services to their customers and to automate business workflow. Besides, more and more people are turning towards the IT industry mostly to launch their own personal or business website or to develop their own internet based business venture looking to the numerous opportunities and development possibilities rising in this field. Other than the most common personal or business websites more and more private ventures related to group buying sites, social networking sites, social bookmarking sites, job portal sites, e-commerce sites and other types of general purpose websites are gradually coming up in the internet market.
However, there is no easy way to find out or explain the size of the web. After all, though there are a few governing bodies and consortia, there’s no real central control system for the Internet. No one really knows with 100% certainty exactly how many websites exist, for example, or how many new websites are set up each day. Nevertheless, a few organizations do make it their business to keep an eye on the domain names that make up the Internet as the web continues its rapid growth throughout the infinite span of cyberspace. Although their data isn’t perfect, it does give us a pretty good idea of the size and growth of the internet.
